Speed

L. J. ***Mr. L. J. Speed did not live or work in the holler, but he was the President of Black Star Coal Company in the 1940’s. He was very supportive of Black Star School, especially the Industrial Arts, Band and Athletic Teams. Through his direction, the company funded many of these programs (Uniforms, Instruments, Shop Equipment, etc.) and petitioned both Harlan County and the Kentucky Board of Education for their support.
